North Salem, New York
North Salem is located in the northeastern part of Westchester County, about 50 mi or 80 km north of Manhattan. Acknowledged as one of the most beautiful and underdeveloped areas in N.Y. city's metropolitan area, its tranquility is now being threatened by rapid growth. After decades of litigation, the zoning laws here have been changed, resulting in new homes and sub-divisions.
The town's population is concentrated in its three major hamlets, Croton Falls, Purdys, and Peach Lake, which straddles the border with the town of Southeast in Putnam County.
North Salem is home to the only vineyard in Westchester, North Salem Vineyard, and holds onto some of the old farm culture being lost in other towns with Outhouse Orchards, where people can go apple picking and buy flowers in the spring, and pumpkins in the fall.
Croton Falls has gourmet delis, a wine merchant, restaurants, groceries and other stores surrounding the Metro-North Railroad station. The train also stops in Purdys.
The arts and culture hold their place in town. DeLancey Town Hall, a restored 18th-century Georgian manor, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden stages art exhibits and puts on festivals throughout the year that promote links between Eastern and Western culture. The town also has more than one art gallery in its small commercial areas, and North Salem Advocates for the Arts holds periodic festivals.
Horseback riding is popular, as is the raising of horses for hunting and jumping. Horseback riders can practice their skills at numerous riding academies and stables, but they also can take their horses along miles of trails that cross open space and private estates. A hunt club maintains a pack of hounds for fox hunting during the season.
Outdoor enthusiasts also can visit Mountain Lakes Park, one of the major parks in northern Westchester and home of the tallest mountain in the county, Mount Bailey. Open fields and rugged hills surround the Titicus Reservoir. Along Titicus Road, there is a 60-ton granite glacial erratic which has inspired a great deal of media attention and scientific speculation.
